One Excellence English Hub is one of 34 schools across England appointed by the DfE to take a leading role in supporting schools to improve the teaching of phonics, early language and promoting a love of reading.
The support provided by the hubs focuses on the following three areas:
- Age-appropriate phonics
- Early-language development and ‘closing the word gap’
- Promoting a love of reading
We are able to offer support to schools in the below areas:

- South Tyneside
- Tyne and Wear
- Northumberland

One Excellence English Hub is based at St. Michael’s C of E Primary School, Bishop Middleham. We are a an outstanding primary school, passionate about early literacy. As a National Support School we have experience in providing high-quality CPD and support to drive school improvement. We are passionate about reading and teaching children to read fluently and for enjoyment.
